The 4th OIE Regional Expert Group Meeting for the implementation of the Programme on Surveillance of Wild Birds and Domestic Birds along Migratory Flyways was successfully organized by the OIE in collaboration with the Japanese Government, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the Ministry of the Environment in Tokyo, Japan on 21 and 22 June 2011.
This two day meeting was attended by more than 60 people including 24 participants from 20 OIE member countries/territories; namely, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong SAR, India, Indonesia, Japan, RO Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, The Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.
The meeting was also attended by experts and researchers from various institutes and organizations including the OIE Reference Laboratory for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in Japan (Hokkaido University), Yamashina Institute for Ornithology, Tottori University, National Institute of Animal Health of Japan, FAO, OIE-Headquarters in Paris, Wetlands International, Bird Life International, East Asian-Australian Flyway Partnership and Bombay National History Society.

In the meeting, OIE Asia-Pacific along with Hokkaido University and Yamashina Institute for Ornithology gave the feedback to the OIE Members in Asia by summarizing outcomes of the OIE’s surveillance Programme carried out in Hong Kong SAR, Laos, Mongolia and Vietnam over the last three years. The outcomes and results of the Progrmme were well shared by the participants. This OIE’s surveillance programme is expected to continue until March 2013.
The meeting provided the good opportunity for the Members in a timely manner to actively discuss how they could be well prepared for any possible introduction/re-introduction of HPAI H5N1 virus in their own countries.
The meeting also provided them with the opportunity to create and enforce a linkage/network/partnership among animal health sector and wild bird sector at national as well as regional levels to strengthen HPAI control and prevention measures of the disease.
