Fighting Rabies in Asia
On the occasion of World Rabies Day on 28 September 2013, the OIE launched a video entitled “Fighting rabies in Asia” to raise awareness about the disease and how to prevent and control it. With funding from the European Union through the Highly Pathogenic Emerging and Re-emerging Diseases Programme, OIE has provided more than 1.3 million doses of rabies vaccines to support vaccination campaigns in Asia this year. The OIE Regional Vaccine Bank for Rabies supplied 200,000 doses of rabies vaccines to Bangladesh, 20,000 doses to Bhutan, 200,000 doses to Indonesia, 120,000 doses to Lao PDR, 200,000 doses to Myanmar, 500,000 doses to the Philippines and 300,400 doses to Sri Lanka.
Through its Sub-Regional Representation for South-East Asia (SRR-SEA), OIE is also supporting Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, the Philippines and Vietnam in raising public awareness about rabies. With funding from the Australian Government and the European Union, OIE SRR-SEA supported the production of communication materials and awareness activities promoting the vaccination of dogs against rabies.
