History

1971

An "OIE Regional Office in Asia" was created through the efforts of its' first Director, Dr Tanaka, who was succeeded by Dr M. Ogata. The office published an occasional regional animal health bulletin until 1981.

1990

Dr Yoshihiro Ozawa

The International Committee decided to reactivate the former "OIE Regional Office in Asia". Thus, at the end of 1991, Dr Y. Ozawa was appointed as "OIE Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific" based in Tokyo, Japan.

Dr Teruhide Fujita

2000

Dr T. Fujita succeeded Dr Y. Ozawa as the Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific. 

2004

FAO and OIE launched the Global Framework for the Progressive Control of Transboundary Animal Diseases (GF-TADs) initiative in 2004 and the Permanent Secretariat of Regional GF-TADs Steering Committee was decided to be located at OIE Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific.

2006

OIE/JSTF (Japan Special Trust Fund) Project for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) Control at source in Southeast Asia (2006-2007) has been launched. 

2008

Two new projects on HPAI Control in the region has been started in 2008.The first one is the OIE/JSTF Programme on HPAI Control at source in Southeast Asia Phase II (2008-2009).

The second project is OIE/JTF (Japn Trust Fund) Project for Strengthening Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Control in Asia (2008-2012).

Dr Itsuo Shimohira

2010

Dr I. Shimohira succeeded Dr Fujita as the Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific.

2011

In April 2011, the Office relocated to "Food Science Building" in Tokyo University. Taking this occasion as a new start of our office, in order to enhance and improve activities of the OIE Asia-Pacific in the region and to facilitate better collaboration with relevant organisations in Japan, "The Lecture Meeting inviting Dr Vallat, OIE Director General" was organised in 10 Sept 2011.

OIE/JTF Project for the control of foot and mouth disease in Asia (2011-2016) has been launched in August 2011. 

2013

Dr Hirofumi Kugita

Dr Itsuo Shimohira left his functions on 31 December 2012. From 1st January and until 31 March 2013, Dr Tomoko Ishibashi deputized for the Regional Representative.

From 1st April, Dr Hirofumi Kugita takes over the functions as the Regional Representative for OIE Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific.

The OIE/JTF Project for Controlling Zoonoses in Asia under One Health Concept (2013-2018) has been launched with the inception meeting held in Tokyo in December 2013.

 

2014

The OIE Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific in Tokyo has assumed the role of Secretariat for Regional Animal Welfare Strategy (RAWS) Coordination Group (CG) according to the agreement at the Meeting of Regional Commission for Asia, the Far East and Oceania on 26th May 2014. The RAWS CG Secretariat role is central to the continued development and implementation of the RAWS. Secretariat activities are guided by the RAWS CG, which has appropriate representation from the OIE, regional governments, industry and non-governmental organisations. The secretariat assists the RAWS CG to monitor and provide advice on the development and implementation of the RAWS in accordance with OIE Standards on animal welfare, and to report to the Regional Commission for Asia, the Far East and Oceania and to the OIE on activities and progress.
